why TENS works for period pain
Not placebo. Not hype. Decades of clinical evidence — and a mechanism that makes perfect biological sense.
what is TENS?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It delivers small, controlled electrical pulses through the skin to the nerves beneath — intercepting pain signals before they reach the brain.
TENS devices have been used in clinical settings for over 50 years. They are recommended by physiotherapists, pain clinics, and midwives worldwide — and have an established, well-researched track record for multiple types of pain.
Emmeline applies this proven technology specifically to period pain, in a form designed to be worn discreetly all day.
the gate control theory
The dominant explanation for how TENS relieves pain is gate control theory, first published by Melzack and Wall in 1965 and now one of the foundational models in pain science.
The theory proposes that pain signals travelling to the brain pass through a kind of neural "gate" in the spinal cord. When that gate is open, pain gets through. When it is closed — or partially closed — the signal is blocked or reduced.
TENS closes the gate. The electrical pulses stimulate large-diameter sensory nerve fibres (A-beta fibres), which override the smaller pain-carrying fibres (C fibres and A-delta fibres) that are transmitting the cramp pain. The result: less pain signal reaches the brain. Less pain is felt.
in plain english
Your nervous system can only carry so much information at once. TENS floods it with a competing signal — one that feels like a gentle pulse — and that signal wins. The cramp pain gets crowded out.
the endorphin effect
At lower frequencies, TENS also triggers your body to release endorphins — the same natural painkillers that respond to exercise, laughter, and physical contact.
Endorphins bind to opioid receptors in the nervous system, reducing pain perception from the inside. This is why TENS relief can outlast a session — the endorphin effect continues even after the device is removed.
Emmeline uses a combination of frequencies to activate both mechanisms simultaneously: gate control for fast relief, endorphin release for sustained comfort.
TENS specifically for period pain
Period pain — medically known as dysmenorrhoea — is caused by the uterus contracting to shed its lining, driven by hormone-like compounds called prostaglandins. These contractions restrict blood flow to the uterus, causing the deep, cramping pain most women know well.
TENS applied to the lower abdomen and lower back directly intercepts the nerve pathways carrying this pain. Clinical trials have consistently found TENS to be effective for dysmenorrhoea:
- A 2002 systematic review in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology found high-frequency TENS significantly more effective than placebo for primary dysmenorrhoea.
- A 2016 Cochrane review confirmed TENS as a viable non-pharmacological treatment for period pain, with a meaningful reduction in pain scores versus control.
- Multiple studies show TENS reduces or eliminates the need for pain medication in women who use it regularly during menstruation.
For women with endometriosis — where the pain is often more severe and more widespread — TENS offers drug-free relief that does not interact with hormonal treatments or other medication.
why not just take ibuprofen?
Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs work by blocking prostaglandin production — which is why they help with period pain. But they come with real trade-offs:
Regular use of NSAIDs can cause gastrointestinal issues and is not recommended for people with certain conditions. TENS has no known systemic side effects and can be used as often as needed.
how Emmeline delivers it
Emmeline is an FDA-registered medical device designed to deliver TENS therapy specifically for period pain, in a form women can actually use day-to-day.
20 intensity modes
Start low and increase until you find your relief point. Most women find it within 3–5 minutes.
targeted placement
Gel pads (angel wings) sit directly on the lower abdomen — where the pain originates.
7–10 hr battery
A full day of relief on a single USB-C charge. Wear it through work, school, or sleep.
silent and discreet
Slim enough to sit under clothes without showing. No one needs to know it is there.
